What Is Line Editing?

While proofreaders and copy editors are concerned with typos and other mechanical errors, line editors focus on elevating the writing and making the message clear while preserving style.

Line editing is the step before copyediting, and is concerned primarily with style (it’s sometimes called stylistic editing) and the use of language at the sentence level. It addresses issues in word use, flow, tone, repetition, and more.

What you'll learn:

  • Work with content on a line-by-line basis, at the sentence and paragraph level.

  • Focus on the writer’s style, paying attention to tone, clarity, and effectiveness of word use.

  • Work to improve the flow and pacing of the content.

  • Take on some copyediting tasks like recognizing a predominant style and working to maintain it.
