There are many benefits to having a flexible job from home. You can dress however you want, work at your own pace, take breaks when you need to—the list goes on. One positive benefit is how much control you gain over your life.
LaToya Carter, who is an editor and Edit Republic alum, says it best: “It’s more of a mental shift than an actual physical shift. It’s a mental shift because it went from getting out of that 9 to 5 mindset to where I can actually stretch my day any way I want.”
LaToya became a freelance proofreader and editor because she wanted a flexible job that would let her focus on raising a family. When she discovered how easy it was to build her own proofreading and editing business, she knew it was for her.
Currently, LaToya runs her business, LCM Editorial Services, as a side hustle alongside her career in the tax industry. She plans to turn her business full-time and offer the full suite of editorial skills: proofreading, copyediting, line editing, developmental editing, and manuscript evaluations.
LaToya is laser focused on her goals. The fact that she has created a thriving editorial business while also managing a second career and raising a family, is a testament to her ambition, skill and determination. I hope you enjoy my interview with her. She was very honest about what it’s like to do so much!
In our video chat, LaToya and I discussed:
- The best advice she ever received about juggling her business, day job, family, and well-being
- What she did to avoid scope creep and how it grew her business and increased her earnings
- What having more flexibility in her life looks like
- How she manages Imposter Syndrome as an introvert
- How our program, High-Level Proofreading And Copyediting Pro, helped her grow her editorial knowledge
