Imagine running a business where you put your family first. Academic editor, Ellen Morgan, had the same thought when she decided to pursue proofreading and editing. The result? “It’s given me a lot of flexibility to be the kind of parent that I want to be.”
That is the biggest way Ellen Morgan’s life has changed since starting her freelance editing business. As a busy mother of two, she has created a life in which her work revolves around her children’s schedule. Not only that, but she makes it very clear to her clients that family is her number one priority.
If you’re a parent, maybe you have the same goal. Or maybe you want to have a schedule where work revolves around life, and not the other way around.
When she was a middle-grade English teacher, Ellen was working 50-60 hours a week. She knew it wasn’t the kind of schedule she wanted for the rest of her life. She had proofread a little in the past for friends, but after taking our course, High-Level Proofreading And Copyediting Pro, Ellen “realized I can actually make this into a business. It doesn’t have to be a few one off things that I do here and there to make some money. This could be my job.”
Now Ellen has replaced her long hours with only working 20-25 hours a week, proofreading and editing academic content. She is the co-owner of Morgan & Felton Consulting. Her partner is a mother as well, which works out beautifully since they understand the unique demands of being a parent.
In my interview with Ellen, we discussed:
- How within a few months of finishing her training she was filling up her schedule
- What editorial service her clients were requesting from her, which allowed her to increase her income
- How she overcame Imposter Syndrome, which led her to charge higher rates that her clients were happy to pay
- How our programs gave her the confidence to start a new career and launch her own business
- The benefits of running a business with another parent
Ellen was also very honest when I asked her how she balances a toddler, newborn baby, work, and other obligations. Watch our chat below!
