At Edit Republic, we'll teach you industry-approved skills and knowledge so you can build the career you've always craved — a self-sustaining editorial business.

Hi, I'm Phon!

And long before I started Edit Republic (formerly known as Art of Proofreading), I was just a kid with her nose buried in books. Reading anything and everything I could get my hands on, words quickly became my life and working with them as an editor became my dream.

Sound familiar?

There was just one problem: I had no idea how to start. It felt like editors were people who lived in big cities or graduated from Ivy League schools — not kids like me who grew up in conservative towns that banned books and went to regular colleges.

So, I winged it. I took media and communications at university and started proofreading and editing on my own without any formal training.

Publishing school and a senior role at a major publishing house soon followed, but a few years in, it became crystal clear:

I wanted to create a business that allowed me to proofread, edit, and write from the comfort of home.

Striking out on my own with a freelance business was one of the smartest moves I’ve ever made, but don’t let a fast-forwarded origin story make it sound like it all happened easily. There were plenty of bumps along the way.

The not knowing how to get started or where to look for skills you don’t have yet? I’ve been there. The questioning of whether an editorial business is even possible? Yep, been there too!

It’s why I started Edit Republic — to show others who dream of a proofreading and editing career that it is possible.

You can have the expert-level skills and the work-from-home career you’ve always wanted, no degree or fancy school required. You can work with words.

Ready to get started?

You've got questions.
We've got answers!

I don’t have a college degree. Can I still become an editor?
Yes! Our courses and tools are designed to provide you with all the skills you need to start your own editorial business and/or apply for real-world editing job opportunities. You don’t need any formal training or a university degree to start.

I’ve taken other proofreading/editing courses before but was let down by the training. How do I know you’re different?
All Edit Republic courses, free training sessions and exercise workbooks have been developed and designed by Phon Baillie, a working editor with 20 years in the industry. You’ll learn editorial + business/marketing skills and specific skills focused on preserving a writer’s voice and style. No fluff or filler here.

What if I don’t live in your time zone? Can I still take the courses?
Absolutely! Our courses are self-paced, so no matter where you live or what your schedule is like, you’ll have access to training at a time that works best for you.

Do you only teach editing and proofreading?
No. We want students to start sustainable businesses, which is why we provide training in proofreading, copyediting, line editing, design, business strategy, and marketing.

Is there an Edit Republic community?
Yes, and it includes students currently enrolled in our courses as well as our incredible alumni. Not only do you get support and advice from your peers, but you’ll also have access to 1:1 mentorship from Phon to help you on your editing journey.
